Guadalest Castle between museums and castles

We visited Castillo de Guadalest, the village of museums.

Castillo de Guadalest is one of the most visited municipalities in the region of the Marina Baja province of Alicante. With only 280 registered inhabitants, it is the municipality in Spain with the most museums per inhabitant.

It is a tourist town that offers a great diversity of hotels and restaurants. The maintenance of all its old town has given it the denomination of “Pueblo Bonito de España” and as recognition to all its historical past in 1974, Guadalest was declared a Historic-Artistic Site.

Guadalest stands out with its cobbled streets and whitewashed houses. It accompanies the charm of its surroundings, green and lush mountains with the turquoise blue of the Guadalest reservoir. With this setting it is easy to be transported to another time in the past of our history.

We highlight for its importance

We visited this beautiful village a few weeks ago and although it was cold, the day was clear and clear.

Before entering the tunnel that leads to the old part of the town, we walk along a pretty path overlooking an impressive garden of palm trees and cacti. We enjoy the moment taking pictures with this beautiful view of the valley looking towards the horizon and the sea.

St Joseph's Castle

The Castle of San José, which can be seen at the top of the rock, was a fortress from the 11th century, created by the Muslims, and from its elevated position it dominates all the views. It played a very important role throughout the Middle and Modern Ages, thanks to its strategic location.

Nowadays, hardly any walls or remains of the walls remain of this castle. The earthquakes of 1644 and 1748 and the blowing up of the castle in 1708 during the War of the Spanish Succession were responsible for its destruction. Guerra de Sucesión fueron los culpables de su destrucción.

From its privileged position we can take some wonderful photographs of the entire outline of this picturesque place. The views do not leave us indifferent, the bell tower and the remains of the Alcoizaba Castle open the view towards the sea.

Museum of Microminiatures by Manuel Ussá (1963-2020)

We went to the Museum of Microminiatures on the recommendation of friends, and the truth is that it did not disappoint us at all.

Looking through a magnifying glass at this artist's art is fascinating: how can you paint on a grain of rice, or on a hair? until you see it, you can't really imagine it.

Manuel Ussá works with instruments that he has invented himself, with technical precision and unequalled skill he has modelled invisible sculptures. To create these works of art, the artist controls his breathing to the maximum and works between heartbeats, preventing his pulse from destroying his work. For the price of admission and a little extra you can also visit the Microgiant Museum of Manuel Ussá to see, among other giant sculptures, a conch-shaped staircase and the Heart of Nature.

Not because of museums.

Here are some of the museums you can visit in this charming town in Alicante.
